The Volunteer Teaching Project aims at educational development of underprivileged children in Arusha. Volunteers are placed in primary schools and orphanages, assisting teachers and giving children a chance at a better future.

Program Details

Volunteer roles and responsibilities:

  • Assist teachers with day-to-day duties and special events
  • Lead English classes and improve pronunciation and conversational skills
  • Plan daily lessons and keep students engaged
  • Teach Maths, Geography, Science, Healthcare, Sports, and Games
  • Help improve student vocabulary and prepare assessment sheets
  • Use interactive and activity-based learning methods
  • Engage students in practical out-of-class activities

Accommodation

Volunteers stay in a shared volunteer house or homestay in Arusha with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Accommodation is safe and within reach of placement schools.

Orientation

Orientation is held on the first Monday and includes safety, culture, placements, and a local tour. You will be escorted to your school on your first day and introduced to staff and students.

Schedule

Saturday/Sunday: Arrival at Arusha.

Monday: Orientation by local coordinator.

Tuesday–Friday: Volunteer work at the placement. Work hours typically 08:30–12:30 (optional to stay longer). Breakfast from 06:30; lunch from 12:30; dinner from 18:30.

Weekends: Free to explore the city, wildlife safaris, or excursions.

Weekends are free to explore Arusha, join safaris, or visit nearby attractions.

Location

All projects are based in and around Arusha, Tanzania—the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro and many national parks. Arusha is a vibrant city where you will experience Tanzanian culture while contributing to meaningful community and conservation work.

Arrival & Airport

Volunteers arrive on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month. You will be met at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport and transferred to your accommodation in Arusha.

Start Dates

Programs start on the first and third Monday of each month, year-round. You can choose a duration from 1 week up to 16 weeks depending on the project.

  • Clean criminal background check required
